The leather covering forms the outer surface of the ink ball and serves as the primary contact point for holding and distributing ink. Stretched over the padded interior, it provides a smooth yet resilient surface that helps transfer ink evenly onto the type during printing. Printers dabbed two ink balls together before transferring ink onto the surface of the type.
