Description
The short story centers around a woman named Patience Woolsworthy who lives in the countryside. One day, Capt. John Broughton journeyed down to Devonshire and fell in love with Patience. With both feelings reciprocated, the pair decided to get married. However, Patience broke the engagement when John attempted to teach her that marriage would raise her social scale. To Patience, she wanted a man who would accept her as who she was.
